An interesting book was published in 1977 by Glenn J. Sneed called “Ghost Towns of Southern Illinois.” A copy of it can be found in the Williamson County Historical Society’s museum research library. I have recently used this book to add about 45 new histories related to the ghost towns of Williamson County to our History Page.
Sneed’s stories seem to come from a different angle than those histories written by Barbara Barr Hubbs accounts and relate information not listed in the Hubbs books. In addition, with the Hubbs histories having been written in 1939 and the Sneed versions in 1977, the Sneed histories tend to be more contemporary, although sentences tend to be fragmented and many names were spelled differently, which I attempted to correct in the transcription for clarity.
All of the histories recently added from this book can be found on the History Page accessible from the Main Menu and will begin with Sneed’s History.
